Altcoin Season Index by time window
The headline score looks back 90 days. The same test over other windows can tell a different story, so here are the Top 100 and Top 50 altcoin sets over 7, 30, 90 and 365 days. The zones are the same for every window: 75 or more is Altcoin Season, 25 or less is Bitcoin Season.
| Window | Top 100 altcoins | Top 50 altcoins |

A short window reacts fast and flips often. A long window moves slowly. They answer different questions. The 365-day view only counts coins with a full year of price history, so it may count fewer than 100 coins.

Which altcoins are beating Bitcoin?
Each row compares one coin’s price change over the last 90 days with Bitcoin’s, which is +25.0% right now. A coin counts as beating Bitcoin only if its 90-day change is higher. The size of the gap does not matter. Bitcoin is the benchmark and is not counted.

No coins match.
n/a means the coin has no price history for that window. Gap is in percentage points of 90-day return.
Is it altcoin season? Three quick checks
The index counts coins. These three readings add context from other angles. None of them is a signal on its own.
These are coincident statistics, not a forecast: they describe how the numbers have moved together, not which one moves first. More on the Crypto Daily Watch dashboard: Fear & Greed Index, heatmap, top gainers and losers and prices.
What is the Altcoin Season Index?
The Altcoin Season Index is a score from 0 to 100 that shows how many of the largest altcoins have done better than Bitcoin over the past 90 days. A high score means most large altcoins beat Bitcoin. A low score means Bitcoin led. It describes what has already happened. It does not forecast prices.
An altcoin is any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. Altcoin season, altseason and alt season all name the same thing: a stretch in which a broad group of altcoins outperforms Bitcoin. The common convention, used by CoinMarketCap and Blockchain Center, calls it Altcoin Season when at least 75% of the top coins beat Bitcoin over 90 days and Bitcoin Season when 25% or fewer do.
Past altcoin seasons have often followed a rotation: money goes into Bitcoin first, then into Ethereum, then into smaller coins. That is a description of earlier cycles, not a rule: as the table further down shows, past altcoin seasons happened with Bitcoin rising sharply in some cases and falling in others.
How to read the Altcoin Season Index
| Score | Zone | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 75 to 100 | Altcoin Season | At least 75 of every 100 altcoins beat Bitcoin over 90 days. |
| 26 to 74 | Neutral | Neither side clearly leads. Above 50, most altcoins are ahead of Bitcoin. Below 50, most are behind it. |
| 0 to 25 | Bitcoin Season | At most 25 of every 100 altcoins beat Bitcoin over 90 days. |
The index is relative. It compares coins with Bitcoin, not with the US dollar. A high score can appear while prices fall, if Bitcoin falls further, and a low score can appear while most coins rise, if Bitcoin rises more.
How we calculate the Altcoin Season Index
- Rank. We start from CoinGecko’s ranking of coins by market cap.
- Remove what is not an independent altcoin. We leave out stablecoins (dollar, euro or yen), tokenized gold and other commodities, tokenized funds, treasuries, stocks and loans, and wrapped, bridged or staked versions of other coins. Their prices follow another asset instead of moving on their own.
- Count 100 altcoins. Bitcoin is the benchmark. We take the 100 largest remaining coins. Ethereum counts as an altcoin. A coin needs at least 91 days of price history; a younger coin is skipped and the next one in line takes its place.
- Measure 90 days. For each coin we compare its US dollar price now with its price exactly 90 days ago (between two daily 00:00 UTC prices we interpolate in a straight line).
- Compare with Bitcoin. A coin beats Bitcoin if its 90-day change is higher than Bitcoin’s. A tie does not count.
- Score. The index is the number of altcoins that beat Bitcoin as a share of the altcoins counted, rounded to a whole number. With 100 coins counted, the score equals the count.
- Zones. 75 or more is Altcoin Season. 25 or less is Bitcoin Season. Everything in between is Neutral.
- Equal weight
- Every coin counts the same. A coin that beats Bitcoin by 1 percentage point counts as much as one that beats it by 300%.
- Same answer in dollars or in bitcoin
- Comparing dollar returns with Bitcoin’s is the same as asking whether a coin’s price against Bitcoin went up.
- Top 50 view
- The Top 50 view uses the first 50 of the same list, so each coin is worth 2 points.
- Other windows
- The 7-, 30- and 365-day views use the same coins and CoinGecko’s own price changes for those windows.
- Quality gate
- If fewer than 95 of the 100 coins have complete data, the page keeps the last full reading and says so.
- Data and timing
- Prices and rankings come from CoinGecko and are refreshed every few minutes; the time of the last update is shown at the top. The reading is recorded once a day at 00:00 UTC for the chart.
- Method version
- 1.0, 7 October 2026. Changes to the method are listed here.
Today’s example: Bitcoin is +25.0% over 90 days. 60 of the 100 altcoins counted are up by more, so the score is 60.

Why different sites show different values
Several sites publish an Altcoin Season Index, and on the same day their values often differ by several points. The rules look alike, but the details are not the same.
| Rule | This page | CoinMarketCap | Blockchain Center |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coins counted | Top 100 altcoins by CoinGecko market cap (plus a Top 50 view) | Top 100 coins ranked on CoinMarketCap at the end of each day | Top 50 coins |
| Left out | Stablecoins, tokenized gold and funds, wrapped, bridged and staked tokens | Stablecoins and asset-backed wrapper tokens such as WBTC, stETH and cLINK | Stablecoins and asset-backed tokens such as WBTC, stETH and cLINK |
| Window | Rolling 90 days | Rolling 90 days | 90 days (also 30- and 365-day versions) |
| Zones | 75 or more, 25 or less | 75% and 25% | 75% and 25% |
| Refresh | Every few minutes; daily record at 00:00 UTC | Page says refreshed daily | No interval stated (calls its index “live”) |
Differences come from three places: which coins are in the list, which price timestamps are used, and how stablecoin and asset-backed exclusions are applied. When several coins sit close to Bitcoin’s return, moving Bitcoin’s 90-day return by one percentage point can shift a score by two or three points. Expect this page to land within a few points of the others on most days, and occasionally ten points or more away, but not on the same number. Each site’s rule is described on its own page, as retrieved on 7 October 2026: CoinMarketCap, Blockchain Center.
Altcoin seasons in the history books
Blockchain Center publishes a daily 90-day Altcoin Season Index going back to April 2017. In that record, through 7 October 2026, the index was at 75 or above on about 12% of days, roughly one day in eight, and at 25 or below on about 28% of days. The other 60% of days sat in the neutral middle. Half of all days fell between about 24 and 59.
The long altcoin seasons sit in the first half of the record: spring and summer 2017 (the record starts partway through that run, so its length is a minimum), January to mid-March 2018 and late March to June 2021, which lasted about three months. Since then they have mostly been short bursts, for example August to mid-September 2022, January 2024, early December 2024 (about a week) and September 2025 (under three weeks). The longest stretch without a reading of 75 or more lasted about 16 months, from September 2022 to January 2024.
Bitcoin Season has been the more common condition, though its typical run is shorter than an altcoin season. The index touched zero in August 2018, stayed at or below 25 for about four months in mid-2019 (126 days, the longest unbroken run in the record) and again from April to mid-July 2023 and for most of the period from late March to early July 2025.
| Approximate period | Days at 75 or above | Highest reading |
|---|---|---|
| April to early August 2017 | about 120 | 100 |
| January to mid-March 2018 | about 75 | 100 |
| December 2019 | about 11 | 85 |
| August to mid-September 2020 | about 33 | 89 |
| Late March to June 2021 | about 89 | 98 |
| August to mid-September 2022 | about 37 | 98 |
| January 2024 | about 13 | 84 |
| Early December 2024 | about 7 | 88 |
| September 2025 | about 12 | 80 |
Runs of days at or above 75, rounded. Bursts within four days of each other are merged; stand-alone bursts of fewer than six days in a row are omitted (19 of the 416 days). The nine episodes shown hold the other 397. The 2017 run was already under way when the record starts on 3 April 2017, so its length is a minimum.
A high reading means most large altcoins beat Bitcoin, not that prices were rising. The August 2022 peak came when Bitcoin was about a sixth below its level 90 days earlier, and the December 2019 episode came with Bitcoin down by almost a third. The January 2018, April 2021 and December 2024 peaks came when Bitcoin was up by roughly 70% to 95% over the same 90 days; the 2018 and 2021 episodes ended with Bitcoin already falling.
These are Blockchain Center’s numbers, not ours: they use a top-50 list and their own price data. Values come from a published chart and can differ by a few points, or by a day, from what was shown at the time. History shows how often and for how long the index has been high. It does not say when it will be high again.

What the index can and cannot tell you
- It counts coins, not gains. A coin that beats Bitcoin by 1 percentage point counts the same as one that beats it by 300%, so one huge gain cannot lift the score.
- It looks back. Everything in the score has already happened, so it confirms a trend after the fact. It does not predict one.
- It is relative to Bitcoin. A high score can appear while most coins fall in dollar terms, and a low score can appear while most coins rise.
- It depends on the coin list. Which coins are included, how stablecoins and tokenized assets are handled and how many coins are counted all move the result. With 100 coins, one coin is one point.
- It can move fast near the edges. When many coins sit close to Bitcoin’s return, a small move in Bitcoin can change the count by several coins within a day.
- The window is fixed at 90 days. The 7-, 30- and 365-day views above can disagree with it.
Altcoin Season Index FAQ
What is the Altcoin Season Index?
The Altcoin Season Index is a score from 0 to 100 that shows how many of the top altcoins have beaten Bitcoin over the past 90 days. A high score means most large altcoins outperformed Bitcoin; a low score means Bitcoin led. It describes what already happened and is not a price forecast or a recommendation.
Is it altcoin season right now?
Check the score at the top of this page. By the common convention it is Altcoin Season when the score is 75 or higher, which means at least 75% of the top altcoins beat Bitcoin over the last 90 days. A score of 25 or lower is Bitcoin Season, and anything in between is Neutral. The score is recalculated from CoinGecko prices that are refreshed every few minutes.
How is the Altcoin Season Index calculated here?
We take Bitcoin and the 100 largest altcoins by market cap, after removing stablecoins, tokenized gold and funds, and wrapped, bridged or staked tokens. For each coin we compare its 90-day price change with Bitcoin’s. The score is the share of those 100 altcoins that did better than Bitcoin. Every coin counts the same, whatever its size or gain.
What score means altcoin season, and what do the other numbers mean?
75 or more is Altcoin Season: at least 75 of every 100 altcoins beat Bitcoin over 90 days. 25 or less is Bitcoin Season. Scores from 26 to 74 are Neutral, with no clear leader. In Blockchain Center’s daily record since April 2017, the neutral middle covered about six days in ten.
Why does this page show a different number from CoinMarketCap or Blockchain Center?
The rules are similar but not identical. CoinMarketCap counts its own top 100 coins, Blockchain Center counts its top 50, and we count the top 100 altcoins in CoinGecko’s ranking. Exclusions, price timestamps and the moment of calculation also differ. When several coins sit close to Bitcoin’s return, a one-point move in Bitcoin can shift a score by two or three points, so gaps of several points between sites are normal, and now and then they reach ten points or more.
Are altseason, alt season and altcoin season the same thing?
Yes. The three spellings name the same idea: a period in which a broad group of altcoins does better than Bitcoin. The terms say nothing about how large the gains are or how long they last, only that most large altcoins beat Bitcoin over the window measured. The Altcoin Season Index is also searched for as the alt season index or the altseason index.
Is Ethereum an altcoin?
Yes. An altcoin is any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin, and Ethereum is counted as an altcoin in this index and in CoinMarketCap’s version. Some writers treat it as a separate blue-chip group because of its size, but here it is one coin among the 100, with the same weight as every other.
When will altcoin season start?
Nobody can say, and this page does not try to. The index only measures the past 90 days. To reach Altcoin Season, at least 75 of the 100 altcoins have to beat Bitcoin over a 90-day window, so the score shows how far the market is from that bar today. Forecasts you read elsewhere are opinions, not data.
How often does altcoin season happen, and how long does it last?
Rarely and unevenly. In Blockchain Center’s daily record from April 2017 to 7 October 2026, the index was at 75 or above on about 12% of days. The average run of such days was about 17 days and the longest at least 117 days, in 2017, a run already under way when the record starts. Since 2022 the episodes have lasted between about one and five weeks, and the last reading at or above 75 in that record was on 26 September 2025.
Can altcoin season happen while Bitcoin is falling?
Yes, because the index compares coins with Bitcoin, not with the dollar. If Bitcoin falls and many altcoins fall less, hold steady or rise, the score can jump. In Blockchain Center’s daily record since late 2017, about one in three days at 75 or above came when Bitcoin was lower than 90 days earlier (our calculation with Binance prices), including the August 2022 peak. Beating Bitcoin does not mean making money in dollars.
Is a reading above 75 a buy signal?
No. The index confirms what already happened over the last 90 days, so by the time it passes 75 much of an altcoin move may be behind us. It also ignores risk, liquidity and fees. Use it as context next to other information, and only risk money you can afford to lose. This page is not financial advice.
How often is this page updated, and where does the data come from?
Prices and market-cap rankings come from the CoinGecko API and are refreshed every few minutes; the time of the last update is shown at the top of the page. The index is recorded once a day at 00:00 UTC for the history chart. Fear & Greed data comes from alternative.me. Powered by CoinGecko.

The Altcoin Season Index describes how many large coins have outperformed Bitcoin over a past 90-day window. It is a backward-looking statistic, it does not predict future prices, and it is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any asset. Values are calculated from third-party market data, may be delayed or revised, and can differ from other providers.
